Hannan House was built as a residence for older adults in 1971. Twenty-two years later, the building underwent a major transformation. Today, the Hannan House functions as a multi-agency service center. Here, older adults living in the Detroit Metropolitan area find a variety of services provided by the Hannan Foundation and its partner agencies. Zena Baum Senior Service Center Hours: Monday-Friday 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. The Senior Service Center is operated by the Hannan Foundation and located on the third floor of Hannan House. In February 2007, the center was named in honor of Zena Baum, a Trustee of the Foundation for more than 30 years. Services include: Individual Case Management The center provides individual case management services for clients aged 60 and older, living in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties. Economic Security Initiative Hannan social workers have the ability to help clients assess his or her financial situation. Using an online program developed by the National Council on Aging, Hannan workers help clients determine whether they qualify for government benefits. MiCAFE Bridge Card Applications Adults aged 60 and older who may be eligible for a Bridge Card can apply through the MiCAFE Program at Hannan House. Call Cheryl Bukoff, social service coordinator, at 313-833-1300, x 20 for more information. Law Clinic The University of Detroit Mercy Urban Law Clinic serves clients aged 50 or older. Services include assistance with wills, debts, mortgage, health proxy, medical bills, Power of Attorney, Social Security benefits, and Medicare or Medicaid benefits. AARP Tax-Aide Service Every Monday and Wednesday from February 2 – April 15, AARP volunteers help older adults with low to moderate incomes prepare tax returns and apply for tax credits. Support Groups Currently, there are two support groups hosted at the Zena Baum Senior Service Center: Alzheimer’s Association Caregiver Support Group: Facilitated by staff from the Detroit Medical Center, this group meets from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m., on the second Thursday of every month. This group is for caregivers of people suffering from memory loss. Parkinson’s Support Group Facilitated by Joan Blount of Michigan Parkinson Foundation, this group meets on the third Tuesday of the month from 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. This group is for people suffering from Parkinson’s disease and their caregivers. Service Coordinator Program The Hannan Foundation collaborates with Presbyterian Villages of Michigan to provide case management services to residents living in five senior apartment complexes in Detroit.
